Women are expected to leave work for extended periods to care for children and parents and men are not. This explains a lot of the wage gap. It even helps explain the other large part of the wage gap, the professions women choose. People keep trying to paint the wage gap as a “myth” because this is a lot of why it’s so. But it’s not a myth. It’s a real economic consequence of gendered expectations.
A white Victorian woman (Ada Lovelace) invented computer programming (for Charles Babbage’s mechanical computer), 1840s
A gay man (Alan Turing) invented modern computing (and also artificial intelligence, in his spare time), 1930s & 40s
A white woman (Adm. Grace Hopper) led development of the first programming languages, 1950 & 60s
A black woman (Katherine Johnson) calculated the trajectory of man’s first trip to the moon, 1960s,
The point: genius is everywhere and deserves to be recognized on its own terms (whatever its statistical distribution)

“I’m not like most other women. I love bingeing on chicken wings and throwing back a few beers, I wear combat boots instead of heels, and I’m immortal. Girls may glance at me sideways for this, but it’s just who I am. Always have been more of a guy’s girl and also immortal. It’s not that I’m not a feminist; it’s just that I constantly find myself in competition with other women—for men, at work, in a seemingly never-ending quest for ultimate knowledge. It takes up all my time and energy, and I just don’t know that I have enough empathy left over to support other women.”

True story: My dad was on a jury that refused to convict a sex worker. I get it natural.

For real tho. “If only the media cared half as much about poor, minority women being exploited as they do white, middle/upper class women in good jobs.” -@NinjaEconomics
This is some seriously fucked-up shit, via @instapundit. Dear attorneys general, conspiring against free speech is a crime.
More fucked-up shit: Law enforcement took more stuff from people than burglars did last year. @NinjaEconomics was on fire yesterday.
